Indian summers have always been brutal. They're getting worse.

In that heat, your body loses fluid faster than you can drink it back. The bigger problem, the one most people don't account for, is that you're not just losing water. You're losing sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, and calcium in every drop of sweat. Drinking plain water in that state replaces the fluid but leaves the electrolyte deficit untouched.

That is why you can drink two litres of water in a hot day and still feel tired, foggy, and cramped by evening.

What actually happens when you sweat in Indian heat

Sodium is the primary electrolyte in extracellular fluid. It regulates how much water stays in your blood and cells versus being excreted. When sodium drops, the body tries to balance concentrations by either pulling water out of the blood or excreting more sodium in urine. Neither response is good for how you feel or how you perform.

Low sodium is directly associated with muscle cramping. It's also what most people just call "heat fatigue." The heavy, slow, brain-fog feeling you get after being out in the sun for a few hours.
